Native American Headdress (Hyde Park on Hudson)

I thought I would make a better post about this headdress. It was used for a few shots in the film Hyde Park on Hudson. It was made by Native Arts Trading for the person I bought it off, and it was inspired by a Headdress worn by Iron Tail. Native Arts make headdresses for films and museums etc and It is pretty cool to own for display as I would never be able to afford one off Native arts trading as they go for quite a bit of money. I though I would post some closer shots if anyone is interested or want to be inspired. It is a very cool piece :)

Close-ups of a few of my favourite pieces :3

Custom beaded keyrings

How awesome are these things, I managed to get some custom made beaded keyrings made in a Native American style for such a good price. These are soo cool, now I need to find things to hang them on :) The picture is a placeholder and I will update when I get them delivered.

Vietnamese mother of pearl pictures

Bought these wonderful vietnamese lacquered mother of pearl pictures for a reasonable price. Very pretty design on the dragon and phoenix on it. It comprises of one large picture and four smaller ones which include the unicorn, dragon, phoenix and turtle design on them. The larger one has a ying yang and dragon and phoenix on it. The larger one will sit under the samurai when it is finally set up in a few weeks which will look lovely. Such fantastic pieces.

Origami is fun, but also terribly soul destroying when it gets complex. It is amazing how complicated it can be and it all simply starts with a piece of paper.

I made a bird on my first try at it, not too bad at all. Youtube has some good tutorials. I am hoping to make some flowers. Origami certainly can help with mental training, give it a try if you have not already.

Cool art things and birthday gift

I thought I would share some more art purchases and things I have received to help inspire. I received a lovely hand painted russian nesting doll set as a gift. Absolutely awesome, and after playing the video game stacking a while back I have always wanted a set :)  I also bought a sombrero and a Huichol gourd beaded bowl off ebay. Also got some cushions, soooo comfy. I am starting to run out of room now :(

Freehand Study 01

Quick freehand study with colour picker tool for guidance. I will be doing many analytical studies trying to understand realism, especially skin texturing and colour theory.

The key to these studies is to bring realism with the least amount of time and detail and with the broadest paint brush strokes possible. Painting on left, freehand on right. The proportions are off a little on the freehand, but I am not working towards perfect copies but to get the message across with the least amount of effort and time. Do not ever trace something when you study, you will never get the necessary hand eye co ordination and analytical skills by doing that.

What is great about the lighting is the high contrast whites on the neck playing with a lovely ambient lighting on the face to make the skin pop. Background colours should be noted as well as they help to bring the skin forward in the painting.

Old Sketches

Some old sketches. I am going to get back into drawing again as I miss it dearly. Time to crack out those WHAT!  pencils in the near future and do some more anatomy studies.

Bonsai to heaven + Way of the Hummingbird

Just dug through some old art and i still love this concept, I will redo these pieces for sure in the future or atleast flesh them out a bit more as I think they are pretty cool concepts. The samurai one is designed to look like a hummingbird from afar :)

Photoshop CS5 vs Artrage 3 blending

Just found out photoshop cs 5 has a dedicated mixing brush and wow, it certainly makes photoshop a much nicer tool to paint with, pretty good blending results. I will probably be going back and forth between photoshop and art rage from now on and see which one I prefer overall for painting. I am also trying to get back into painter, but it is such a resource hog compared to the the other two. I'll see how things go.

A quick tip

Here is a tip if you want to produce fast concept art.

Produce all your work in greyscale, concentrating on the greyscale values and contrasts to get the right mix. I am using ArtRage for shading and then whacking it into photoshop for colouring at the moment. Use any brush in photoshop and set it to color mode and just simply paint the colour on the painting.

Don't forget to set lock transparency on the layer for easier painting. This method wont produce mind blowing colour work like doing it normally, but it is fast and efficient.

An old sketch

Just found an old sketch of how I like to mock up characters in the initial stage. I think silhouettes and fragmented drawing is probably the best method to getting a good design especially with armour. The idea is the hardest thing to get right. I really want to get back into character design, but i am going back to basics for a while and doing proper classical studies trying to figure out the best workflow and methods for myself to creating realistic art and realistic concept art.

Intuos 5 impressions

Ok after my beloved intuos 4 died on me, and having a love hate attitutude with it i was very skeptical about the intuos 5. But i do love wacom deep down but they have let me down, but i decided to jump onto the intuos 5 because i need my digital art fix to relax to.

Ok this thing is very nice, the touch controls i thought were unnecessary does add something nice to the table, with the ability to zoom and rotate the convas with the finger tips. The buttons i feel have been improved as well. I thought getting rid of the oled mini screens were a step backwards, but they were aiming for an eyes on the screen approach without needing to look at the tablet.

It has an on screen display for the buttons when you hover gently over the buttons. Sadly the touch controls do not work with acetate sheets, so my solution is to do a half and half approach. Half acetate for left hand drawing and no nib wear and right hand touch gestures for quick zooming etc and see how it goes. Hopefully i can get back into digital art far better now and really dig into it to accomplish my goals even if it is only a hobby.

RIP Wacom tablet

Wacom, i hate you so much. Why did they design this tablet so badly is beyond words. Not only did they design a god awful cover sheet which wore down nibs, lol quick cash in for new nibs, very clever wacom (i used acetate sheets to fix this problem when i should not have to but i liked it it anyway) but your god awful usb slots which are prone to breaking and impossible to solder back on without a machine. So a toast, to an awesome, badly designed product which for some reason i loved to use.

Ah well, i might make a keychain out of it XD

Quick Rider concept

Rough mockup for a dirt bike rider. Ill be fleshing out a character in the future along this theme.

Rough concept

A rough concept for a female knight i did a while back. My aim is to complete a 3d modelled and animated knight character in the future as a mascot for the showreel, it will take a long time to complete the concept but this is a basic initial idea just to spark ideas. The final character will be male to fit in with the story i have thought out for the scenes for the showreel.

Concept and zbrush Tests

Maya modelling test

Maya modelling test for a dirt bike wheel. Using duplicate special as a main tool it is amazing how something which seems complicated can be broken down when analysed. The wheel spokes were something a little tricky to get the pattern but is easy when the pattern emerges. I need to look into spline modelling far more as it is editable.

Matte painting test

Matte painting using texturing techniques from many photographs to create whatever you would like to do. Extremely powerful technique with quick results for concepting.
